I am an
educator, facilitator and social worker
who
has spent the last 25 years using
adventure and activity as a way to help
people heal from all types of life
challenges. I have also used
adventure and activity to help myself
heal.
My
relationship with cancer began 15 years
ago when my sister Cathy died at the age
of 44 from breast cancer. Six
years ago I rode my bicycle
from new Hampshire to Oregon to raise
money to create a non-profit
organization called The
Cancer
Community Renewal
Project offering healing and wellness
programs to cancer survivors.
The name
of that bike ride was called
"I Will
Because I Can". I had an
opportunity and an obligation to make a
difference in the fight against breast
cancer by supporting women who were
currently surviving it. During
that ride - on my most difficult days -
I would say to myself "this is nothing
compared to what cancer survivors go
through" and that would help me move
forward. (Read about the We Will Because
We Can Bike Ride 2007 -

In June
2004 I was diagnosed with breast cancer
and during my chemotherapy treatments I
would say to myself "this is nothing
compared to riding my bike across
country" and that would help me move
forward. A year to the day of my
mastectomy I rode my bike in the Seattle
to Portland bike ride, a 200-mile 2-day
event. On the second day, going up
a hill in the rain I said to myself
"this is nothing compared to going
through chemotherapy."
During
all those experiences - and other life
challenges - I naturally created what I
call my Cycle
of Resiliency tm.
When a new challenge would arrive I
would draw upon my previous experiences
and they would help me move forward.
I found
out recently - during a recurrence scare
- that when we are faced with
uncertainty and fear we consistently
fall back on the familiar. I am
committed to helping people develop a
pocket full of rich and diverse
experiences and relationships to draw
upon when faced with their next
challenge.
Through
coaching and renewal programs
I use the healing power of natural
environments and safe and supported
adventure based programs to help people
REACH Beyond their fear and become more
inspired to face their life challenges.
When we
have the freedom to experience adventure
and take supported risks in places that
are separate from our everyday struggles
and uncertainties, we can find the
courage to ask and answer the difficult
questions. We can begin to examine
our relationship to our fears and
develop communication and coping skills.
We can accomplish activities and create
relationships that empower us and
develop our resiliency.
During those times we become
inspired.
When we are inspired we are
creative survivors.
